Mojack recommends:
Some books to read by Filipino authors.
"The Manila We Knew" is a collection of real stories about Manila before and after World War II. One author wrote about her family's harrowing experience in the battle of Manila and vowed never to talk about it ever again. But there are happy stories, too, about growing up in a genteel city where one could stroll to schools like St. scholastica's and La Salle,  and about growing up in an almost deserted suburban village called Forbes Park called Makati .

While "The Manila We Knew" was written from the privileged class' point of view, F. Sionil Jose's  "Ermita" is written from an outsider's prespective. A rich maiden is raped by a Japanese soldier during the last days of the war and gives birth to a girl she disowns. Ermita is the heroine who seeks revenge from her family by any means. The ending though, was like how I felt after watching Gonw ith the Wind.

"Ilustrado" is a recent novel that has been praised all over and while the writing is indeed seductive and engaging, I got a headache trying to keep track of all the characters and time periods.

Multo and other drawings
Happy All Saints' Day! It's raining in Manila and it's going to be icky to visit the cemetery with all the mud and the rain. But it's tradition. Another tradition it seems is that the day to honor the dead has also become a tiem for sharing stories about  restless spirits. Here's a photo illustration I did for such an article. Read the article here:
Meanwhile, here are some other works I did that didn't come out in color. Sayang naman ang effort ko so I'm sharing them here. Enjoy!

Lunch at Cabalen: A mini review

Some pix from Mama's birthday at the Paranaque dampa where we had chili crab, steamed shrimps, halaan soup and roasted pork...and Wowa's birthday in Lucena. I thought we would have a simple get-together at Wowa's place but I was wrong. After the pabasa (prayer) for my departed Wowo, who died 5 years ago, it was a catered merienda with pancit and fish and chicken and buko pandan, too.

The curious case of Aga M.

Was it just me or did the caricature of Aga look more and more like Gretchen Barretto as I went along? Does that mean Gretchen looks like a guy, my officemate asked. No, Aga is so pretty he looks like a girl. Curiouser, they were an item once, too.

Baguio map art
here's a bit of nostalgia for all the folks missing Baguio, before the pollution, before the SM mall, before the earthquake. I don't know when exactly this was made but the Hyatt Terraces is still there.
All I know is that this was published by Bookmark(264 Vito Cruz Extension, Makati) produced by Creative Art Techniques(1737 G&H Dayap Street, Makati) and made by GD Gutierrez Design and Graphics studio. The awesome handpainted map was made by Aurelio P. Gutierrez

Here's my entry to a backpabck design competition. I didn't win but I'm very proud of my work. more pictures here
